Today - January 14

January 14 is the New Year’s Day according to Julian calendar as we saw in yesterdays post.

Today in India people celebrate Makar Sankranti. In fact the same day is celebrated in different parts of India with a different name. Other than Makar Sankranti the day is also famous for Pongal, Lohri and Bihu. All these festivals are of new crops being collected.

Now the actual significance of the day is that the Sun makes the transition into the Makar or Capricorn zodiac from Dhanu or Sagittarius when the days start to become longer. The actual date of Winter Solstice is December 21 but due to earth’s tilt of 23.45 degree the date of Makar Sankranti slides further to what it is now, today, January 14. 1000 years ago it was on December 31st whereas after 5000 year it will be end of February and after 9000 years it will be in June.

When we were child this was a very special day for us. Will talk about it in next post. This is the day for enjoying a nice meal! Go. Enjoy.

Jai Gurudev!
Love!
