On this day in 1554 the great city of Sao Paulo of Brazil was founded. It is the largest and the richest city in Brazil. It is also world’s 7^th largest metropolitan area and with an estimated population of 11,037,593 residents within 1,523 square kilometers it is the most populous city in the Southern Hemisphere. Because of its economical importance it is considered also as an Alpha World City.

In 1890 Elizabeth Jane Cochrane who is famous as Nellie Bly completed a rare fate. She finished her round-the-world journey in 72 days in that time. She was a pioneer woman journalist. In 1988 she desired to take a trip round the world to turn the famous fictional Around the World in Eighty Days into a fact. A year later, on November 14, 1889 she left New York and started her journey of 24,899 miles. After covering England, France, Brindisi, the Suez Canal, Colombo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan in 72 days 6 hours 11 minutes and 14 seconds she arrived in New York which was a world record that time.
