Today - February 11

11th of February.

In 1916 Emma Goldman was arrested because she was lecturing on birth control. She was known for her political activism, writing and speeches most of which were in the development of anarchist philosophy and she worked towards it spreading the message of it throughout the country for which she faced imprisonment also. But she is still known best for her strong feminism type character and her work for the woman. A nurse by training, she was one of the earliest advocates for educating women on contraception. She saw abortion as a tragic consequence of social conditions and birth control as a positive alternate. In 1987she quoted saying this,

I demand the independence of woman, her right to support herself; to live for herself; to love whomever she pleases, or as many as she pleases. I demand freedom for both sexes, freedom of action, freedom in love and freedom in motherhood.

We should talk about Nelson Mandela also. After 27 years of political imprisonment Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster Prison outside Cape Town. He was an anti-apartheid activist and the South Africa court convicted him on charges of sabotage. But after his prison term and the end of apartheid many people have praised Mandela even including his opponents for his efforts and been recognized with the Noble Peace Prize in 1993.

Jai Gurudev!

Love!
